Internet Explorer and Unicode
From Spivey's Corner
The wiki software I'm using for this site has been enhanced to show Haskell and Oberon code nicely. To do this, it uses Unicode characters that Firefox and some other web browsers know how to display. However, even version 7 of Internet Explorer can have difficulty with them, and may not be able to display characters like this little triangle: ▷. With some settings of Internet Explorer, the triangle is replaced by a little square. If that's affecting you, then you chould check these things:
- That the font Lucida Sans Unicode is installed in your copy of Windows. It comes as standard with all versions of Windows since Windows 98.
- That Internet Explorer is set up to allow web pages to select their own fonts, rather than using a fixed set. To check this (in IE7, but other versions are similar), choose Tools / Internet options; select the General tab and click on Accessibility near the bottom right. Verify that the check box labelled 'Ignore font styles specified on web pages' is not ticked, then click on OK and OK again.
- That you would not be happier using Firefox when all is said and done.
Internet Explorer also doesn't show the nice rounded corners that I've added to various page elements. I know there are tricks to make it show them, but I'm not going to use them.
